A "Chance" of a Lifetime... "Still Takin Chances" 1997-2004
I purchased Chance at the tender age of 8 months, solely from a snapshot photograph and his pedigree. A woman in Indiana had bred her mare and she produced this grand, beautiful looking colt. She listed him for sale and as soon as I saw the ad, I contacted her right away. This was before all of the e-mail stuff and digital photographs so I had to wait for the pictures to arrive in the regular mail. We sealed the deal and on January 2, 1998, Tom and I left for Indiana to pick up our new baby horse. Weather was good, but remember, we live in Iowa and going thru the Midwest in the middle of winter, may not be the wisest thing for people to do! We arrived in Indiana that night. The next morning at 8 am, when we arrived at the farm where Chance was at, they took us back to the barn and standing there being loved by a young girl, was baby Chance. Tom gave me that, you’ve got to be kidding look! Chance was this little, extremely fuzzy baby horse. I knew I had a treasure and later in the truck on our way home, I told Tom, "Don’t worry, I know what he can become!" On our way home, mother nature reminded us it was the middle of winter as the last 2 hours of the trip was through terrible freezing rain and sleet. We finally got home about midnight and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get him out of the trailer as the trailer doors were so thickly covered in ice I could barely get them open. I got them opened and gently guided him out of the trailer with hopes he would stay on his feet and not fall down! All was well and I eagerly got him into his stall at his new home.
Chance, to me was the epitome of what a Morgan should be. Good body, mind, feet, temperament, and a look at me attitude. We won numerous championships throughout his short life. He was an in-hand champion, a pleasure driving reserve champion, an English Pleasure champion, and a Western Pleasure champion. You would never know he was a stallion as he was a perfect gentleman at all times. Next to our family, losing Chance has been the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with. If you are a true horse lover, you know what I mean.
He left me with several wonderful sons and daughters. I have kept his son, Loess Hills Chances R, as our herd stallion, and his daughter, Loess Hills Already Takin, as a broodmare. Both have produced wonderful offspring so as time continues, so does the legacy of my beloved stallion, whose life was cut way too short ... Still Takin Chances.
